This limited engagement officially kicked off as a celebration of the significance of Juneteenth through a select collection of works showcasing strength, resilience and community. June 19, 2023 - or Juneteenth - which marks “our country’s second independence day,” according to the Smithsonian National Museum Of African American History And Culture. It celebrates the end of chattel slavery in the United States.
The event caters to diverse interests and ages, with art offering for all. Discover new artwork and deepen your appreciation for abstracts and watercolor portraiture. The showcase extends support for local artistry through its partnership with the shopping center.
The event runs from June 22 to July 15 and public viewings are available Thursdays through Saturdays, from 12pm-8pm during this time. Private appointments are available upon request. The artist will host public receptions on Thursday, June 22 and Thursday July 13th, where he will be available for guided tours of the artwork on display, sharing commentary on his inspiration and process behind his famed “Lifescapes”.
Smallwood’s “Lifescapes”, portray subjects in their natural environments with an emotive and evocative narrative painstakingly engineered to escort the viewer through the frame and medium into the world of the subject. Through his work, Smallwood exposes the souls of his subjects, as well as his own, to the viewer.
